Trojan Explosion Performs At First Battle Of The Bands Competition

The Virginia State Trojan Explosion Marching Band recently traveled to compete in the 2023 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands competition in Houston, Texas. This was the band’s first out-of-state Battle of the Bands competition for 2023-2024.

Director of Bands Mr. Taylor L. Whitehead recapped the highlights of the first competition and also previewed some events in the future.

HB: How was the recent Battle of the Bands competition located in Houston, Texas?

TW: “The Battle of the Bands in Houston was an amazing opportunity for our students and program. This was our first trip where the full band flew on planes which added to the excitement. The event was a great opportunity for exposure.”

HB: “How many other schools usually compete in the Battle of the Bands competitions?”

TW: “There are many Battle of the Bands throughout the year featuring HBCU Bands. VSU happens to be one of the most sought after DII programs.”

HB: “How tough was the competition for the Battle of the Bands Competition and did you guys place?”

TW: “The competition was not judged. However, the bands in attendance represented some of the best, largest, and most popular HBCU bands in the country. It was a fierce battle.”

HB: “How many Battle of the Bands competitions does the Trojan Explosion Band usually have per year?”

TW: “Each year VSU participates in about three Battle of the Bands.”

HB: “How well did you think the Trojan Explosion Band did at the competition?”

TW: “I thought the band had a good first performance. I am looking forward to an excellent season.”

The Trojan Explosion can be seen on campus at many events showcasing their talents. In addition to the competitions, recently the band has performed at convocation, the opening inaugural Women’s Soccer home match, and at the football game.
