On Monday, April 20, faculty members and students gathered to witness the first event in what is being described as the Inaugural Theatre Takeover.
Starting on main street, the Trojan Alliance Performing Arts or TAPA’s djembe drum battery, accompanied by a stilt walker, marched from Foster Hall to the new Alfred Harris Academic Commons. The event started at 6 p.m.
During this first event, musicians played the drums, dancers performed traditional dances, and faculty members performed dramatic readings.
The procession, which kicked-off the event, was a Jonkonnu-style celebration.
Events will continue to take place following the events on Monday evening. There will be more performances and a reception on Wednesday, April 22, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in room 1104. Virginia’s new Poet Laurette Dr. Latorial Faison will be presenting on Wednesday.
On Friday, April 24, from 6 to 9 p.m., Professor Alethea McCollin will present Styx and Gunz in the Black Box Theater.
The festivities continue next week as well on Tuesday and Thursday, and conclude on Saturday, May 2.
Actor, director, and producer Antonio David Lyons will be the guest on Thursday, April 30. Director of Racial Justice Institute’s EnActors at Georgetown University, Lyons will speak and be followed by Professor Palmer with a reading and talk back.
The Theatre Takeover will conclude on May 2 with workshops focused on drumming, dancing and acting for school-age children led by VSU students.
