At Virginia State University, there are many student organizations that help shape campus life, but one that is still growing and not widely known is the Student Art Organization, also known as the VSU Art + Design Student Org.
Since it was founded on Sept. 9, 2024, the organization has been slowly building its presence on campus. Even though it is still fairly new, it has already created a strong sense of community for students who are passionate about art.
The Art Organization was founded by Alaiza Washington with the goal of giving student artists a real platform on campus. As of 2026, the current president is Da’Mya Moore, who now leads about 30 active members.
When asked about the organization’s mission, Moore explained that it aims to, “establish a platform that nurtures and supports artistic talent on campus while also serving as a way to give back to the department it originated from.” This shows that the Art + Design Student Org is not just about making art, but also about building something meaningful for both students and the department that helped inspire it.
The way the organization defines creativity is also powerful. Moore described creative expression as, “being able to use your voice without using your voice.” That idea really captures what art can do. Not everyone is comfortable speaking in front of people, but through painting, drawing, digital design, fashion, or other forms of art, students are able to express how they feel without saying a word.
One important part of the Art + Design Student Org is how welcoming it is, especially to students who may not think they are “good” at art.
“Anyone is able to do what they want to do, and we provide the tools and knowledge needed to get them started and support them along their journey,” Moore said.
Instead of focusing on perfection, the organization focuses on growth. Upperclassmen help guide others, and members learn from each other in a supportive environment.
The Art + Design Student Org also makes it clear that all forms of art are accepted. Whether a student works in digital media, visual arts, performance, fashion, or another creative field, they are welcome. Members bring different styles and experiences, which makes the group more diverse and collaborative.
Even though the organization is still new, it has already hosted several events on campus. They have organized “Paint and Draw + Watch Films” nights, drew fellow students during Org Bazaar’s on campus, and hosted themed drawing sessions where others can come watch the creative process.
They have also collaborated with the TAMM department for fashion shows, showing that their creativity goes beyond just traditional drawing or painting. Through these events, the Art + Design Student Org has stayed active and continues to slowly gain recognition.
Creating a safe space is another major priority. Moore explained, “We don’t judge, and we give everyone the creative freedom to express themselves however they want.”
That mindset helps students feel comfortable sharing their ideas without fear of criticism. In a college environment where people are still figuring out who they are, having that kind of space can make a big difference.
“The Art and Design Student org gave me a space to lead and experiment, and it has allowed me to connect with other like-minded artists and creatives across many genres,” senior Joshua Branch-Howell said. “I would say it gave me a new perspective on what it means to collaborate and what it means to turn a vision into a reality, and more importantly it helped me build confidence as a creative director.”
This organization at Virginia State University may still be new, but it is clearly making an impact. With around 30 active members, supportive leadership, and consistent involvement in campus events, Art + Design Student Org is continuing to build its name and creates opportunities for student artists to express themselves and grow.
