During the early summer mornings, most students are still fast asleep while Lajohn Plummer stands tall at Davis Hall. The sound of his whistle cuts through the early morning air, signaling the start of another intense day of practice.
As one of the drum majors of the Virginia State University Marching Band, Plummer doesn’t just lead the music; he sets the tone for the entire band. His story started when he began playing an instrument in middle school. From then on, music was more than a pastime to him.
“I first started band in the sixth grade and my first instrument was the trumpet,” Plummer said.
What was once a simple interest eventually formed into a full fledged endeavor that would lead him to be the head of one of the finest HBCU marching bands in the country. His first experience in this role came in high school.
“When I was in tenth grade, that was my first year as drum major, and it carried out until I graduated from Nansemond River High School,” Plummer said.
This experience became the basis for the style and vision he wanted to instill in all aspects of his leadership.
Being a Commander of Troy at VSU entails heavy responsibility. Plummer is one with an enormous passion for such work.
“My favorite part of being a Commander of Troy is definitely being able to do more for the band on a higher level,” Plummer said. “I’m big on making better changes for the greater good.”
His goal is not merely to perform but also to elevate the band and its members. Plummer’s leadership goes beyond the field. He views his position as an opportunity to inspire others. His words for the drum majors-to-be says a lot about his character.
“Continue to follow your dreams and find your purpose,” Plummer said. “When you find your purpose, just make sure you stick with it.”
He knows the challenges of it all. Early mornings and long rehearsals can drain you mentally.
“That’s going to get you through those long nights,” Plummer said. “You have to look back at that and tell yourself you can.”
