Baseball takes three wins from weekend series
This past Sunday the baseball team took home a close 2-1 win, beating Bluefield State at home. The Trojans scored in each the 2nd and 4th innings, with Bluefield scoring in the 6th. Ricky Jones (#23) scored both runs.
Starting pitcher Christian Henderson (#22) was credited for the win. The Trojan baseball team also went on a winning streak beating Bluefield State in 3 of 4 of their games this past weekend which improved the Trojans’ season to 16-12.
Henderson cares about the game and his teammates and reflected on the teams’ three straight wins.
“For my team to get multiple wins this weekend, we have to keep playing clean baseball and staying behind each other and keeping each other from getting down no matter what’s going on in that moment,” Henderson said.
Rightfielder David Johnson earned the game’s first RBI with a sacrifice ground ball to the shortstop scoring Jones in the 2nd. Designated hitter Markeefe Beckett drove in Jones in the 4th with a ground out to second base. Bluefield scored their lone rune in the 6th on a line drive to centerfield.
“The most memorable moment from this weekend personally is when my teammate Avante Banks made a crazy catch over the shoulder to keep the other team from scoring late in the game while I was pitching,” Henderson said.
After Bluefield won the first out of the four games last weekend, scoring 7 runs some teams might have lost their focus but not the Trojans.
“My focus going into the game Sunday was just to go in and throw strikes and give my defense a chance to make the plays behind me,” Henderson said.
Henderson has improved tremendously on the field, throwing strikes, and having a strong year on the mound.
“On the mound, since my first start, I feel that I’ve improved my command of the zone and I’ve been able to hide my emotions better when things aren’t going my way,” Henderson said.
The Trojans travel to West Virginia this weekend to take on Bluefield State again in a three game series on Saturday and Sunday.
