Every fall, Virginia State University transforms into a hub of celebration as alumni and current students come together for Homecoming. This year, the Homecoming theme is “The Hill Unleashed.”
This cherished tradition fosters a sense of belonging and pride in the VSU community.
Alum Queen Thomas from the graduating class of 1998 remanences about her time at the university.
“I had the best time of my life at VSU and I met lifelong friends. I love my HBCU,” Thomas said.
Homecoming week is packed with events, from spirited parades to the highly anticipated football game.
“My favorite thing about homecoming was the step show,” Thomas said.
“I would say the concert is my favorite. The energy the artists brings is always fun to experience,” Emma Quarles, class of 2022 alum, said.
The significance of Homecoming extends beyond the festivities. For many alumni, returning to VSU evokes cherished memories of their college days.
“Even though it hasn’t been that long since undergrad, walking around campus feels like stepping back in time,” Quarles said. “It’s where I met some of my closest friends and had the most fun. I had a time at VSU.”
Although Homecoming is a week packed with events and fun, the alumni remind students of the importance of staying focused.
“Classes are still going on during the week, so going to class still needs to be a priority. Those assignments don’t stop – I feel like Homecoming really tests how you manage your time,” Quarles said.
Classwork and events aren’t the only things students need to be aware of during homecoming. Staying vigilant and safe is a must.
“It gets crazy sometimes. It gets really packed and a lot is going on, but you have you make sure everyone is being safe,” Quarles said. “Always check your surroundings and just look out for everyone you’re with.”
Safety aside, Queen Thomas leaves students with some advice.
“Enjoy this time of your lives. Be involved and make the most of college. Find out about everything that is offered to a take advantage of all those opportunities. This is your time to shine,” Thomas said.
