Virginia State University split a doubleheader with the Apprentice School on Friday afternoon, winning the second game 5-1 at their home field in Ettrick. Jimmyll Williams went 3-for-3, contributing significantly to the victory, while Christian Henderson’s 3 RBIs helped seal the win.
The game remained close until the seventh inning, when VSU took control. Henderson’s third double of the inning scored Morris and Williams, putting the Trojans ahead. This offensive rush was supported by Joseph Hastings’s complete-game performance on the mound, where he struck out nine strike outs and allowed three hits and one run.
Hastings’s pitching, combined with key hits from Williams and Henderson, gave VSU a crucial edge. The win marked Hastings’s first of the season, which was well earned and gave the team much excitement as well as himself.
“That feeling is amazing,” Henderson said. “To be able to come into that at-bat and make something happen was great. I have to give credit to the guys in front of me for getting on base and giving me the opportunity to drive them in and take the lead.”
The win brings VSU’s record to 9-15, with the Apprentice School now at 26-6.
