In just a few short weeks, a parade of graduates will once again be walking across a packed stage in the Multi-Purpose Center for Spring Commencement 2025.
In recognition of this upcoming event, we spoke to some students who have a few more credits to obtain, but are still eagerly anticipating their day to shine.
We asked them two very straightforward questions: 1. Why is graduation so important to you? 2. What are you most excited about with regards to the ceremony?
“It [Graduation] represents both an end goal and a new beginning for me. Though graduating itself is not the ultimate goal of my life, it shows the work I’ve put in to make it this far,” Wayne Ayisi-Bampoe said. “The best part of the ceremony is when the degree is put in your hand, and everything you’ve done to get to that point flashes before your eyes.”
“Graduation is important because it shows your hard work and what you have worked for. This includes the pain, suffering, setbacks, and fear,” Issac Baker said. “The best part about the ceremony is your name being called… this proves you accomplish a goal not just for yourself, but the people that supported you along the way. Also getting that degree makes you feel like a child getting a toy that you always wanted.”
“Graduation is important to me because it’s the one time as a student and as a career-chaser where we as individuals get to really celebrate all the hard work and dedication we have put in to get to this point. Many people don’t make it to graduation unfortunately, so for the ones that do, it’s only right they receive the respect upcoming and alumni graduates deserve,” Jonathan Hall said. “The best part about the ceremony is receiving the degree as you walk down the aisle. (I’m gonna hit a back flip when I get finally mine.)”
“Graduation is important to me because when I graduate, I will know that I have completed a big step in creating the life I want for myself in the future,” Jairus Cobb said. “To me, the best part about the ceremony is getting to walk across the stage and see those you knew along the way do the same.”
“Graduation is important to me because it’s a physical celebration of your achievements throughout school and your academic life. Its a chance for your family and friends to come to recognize your hard work while congratulating your peers at the same time,” Carmen West said. “I think the best part of the ceremony is at the end when everyone turns their tassels and the feelings of accomplishment start to erupt. It’s so surreal to walk by your teachers and staff members who’ve helped you finally reach the milestone you’ve been looking forward to for so long. It’s definitely a once in a life-time experience.”
“I think graduation is important to me because what people will see of me is that I am capable to handle any work thrown in front of me and to represent my family the right way,” Anthony Lyons said. “The best part of the ceremony is walking down to the stage, looking around to see your family proud of your accomplishments and seeing others also succeed.”
We look forward to an exciting Commencement 2025 on May 17. And we hope that everyone’s dream of college graduation comes true just as they have envisioned it.
