Democrat gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger won the Virginia State elections against Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in this year’s November elections. The elections were held on Nov. 4, all over the state of Virginia. Virginians all over were voting for not only a new governor, but they were also voting for a new lieutenant governor, attorney general, and new delegates throughout the state.
Polling stations were held all throughout the state of Virginia in which Virginians were able to cast their votes in-person on election day. The Multi-purpose Center at VSU was a polling station in which students, faculty, and other local residents were able to cast their votes for this past election.
The Virginia Democratic party also won in the other big categories in this past election. For lieutenant governor former state senator Ghazala Hashmi won the seat against conservative radio host John Reid.
In the race for attorney general, former Delegate Jay Jones beat incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares in the race. While the Democratic party was able to win the election it was not without its controversy.
In the weeks leading up to election day, violent text messages were leaked in which they revealed to have been sent by Jay Jones in 2022. Jones’ text messages included messages of threats of violence towards a state lawmaker.
Jones released a statement in which he apologized for the text messages in both a public statement and at a debate stop in Richmond.
“I am ashamed, I am embarrassed and I’m very sorry,” Jones said at the attorney general debate in Richmond on Oct. 16.
Throughout the Richmond, Virginia area (RVA) the Democratic party was able to outscore the Republican party throughout many of the cities. In Petersburg, Governor-Elect
Spanberger earned 88.46% of the votes with a total of 8,811 votes compared to Earle-Sears only earning 11.29% with a total of 1,124 votes.
Spanberger also earned a lot of votes in other cities in the RVA area in places such as Chesterfield in which the voter turnout was close between the two candidates. With
Spanberger earning a total of 100,595 votes there compared to Earle-Sears earning 70,021 votes there.
After the polls closed at 7 p.m., the results were revealed about an hour later showing that Spanberger had beat Earle-Sears. Later that Tuesday night, Spanberger and her family came out to greet supporters and speak about her winning the election.
“We sent a message to every corner of the commonwealth, a message to our neighbors and our fellow Americans across the country,” Spanberger said to her supporters on Tuesday night. “We sent a message to the whole word that in 2025, Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship. We chose our commonwealth over chaos.”
